1.

2.

3.

4.
Description:
  1. Starting from a neutral position, sink your weight into your heels and let your knees drop downwards
  2. Pivot on your heels as you turn your torso to the left; your arms should be in double lan sao position
  3. Pivot back 180° to the right, hands remaining in the same position
  4. Pivot back 180° to the left.

Details:

  • Pivot point is the heels.
  • Hips and shoulders should point 90° from the center at the end of each turn
  • Feet should be parallel to each other, about 45° off the center
  • Entire foot should remain in contact with the ground
  • Knees should be bent, pointing in the same direction as the feet

Common mistakes:

  • Turning on the balls of the feet
  • Not turning the torso all the way
  • Feet in the wrong position
  • Knees not in (reduces stability and opens groin to kicks)

Teaching Notes:

  • Have the student try this at differing speeds.
