Siu Nin Tao: Opening - Crossing Chuan Sao

6. Thrust your hands downward, left hand over right so that your wrists cross even with your belly button.

7. Flip your hands up while rotating your forearms so that your palms face you; your fingertips should be even with your eyes.

8. Return to the stance

Side profile of upper and lower positions.

The upper and lower crosses of the wrists mark two points in space, which, when connected, measure the centerline.

The middle fingers on both hands mark four points in space, which, when connected by four lines, mark the economy of motion box.
NOTE: lines adjusted to compensate for camera angle.

Details:

  • Left arm starts on top of the left hand.
  • Low cross of wrist should be roughly at navel height.
  • Roll wrists up instead of just lifting
  • High cross of wrist should be at the top of the sternum.
  • The high and low angles are bisected by a line parallel to the ground.

    Application:

  • Measuring the center line: point one is the lower cross of the wrists, point two is the upper cross
  • Measuring an "economy of motion box" that shows extent of hand movement
  • Defining "personal" space
  • Lifting a hand from a low position - like an uppercut
  • Block against a Thai boxing knee attack - debatable
  • Threading motion - "chuan sao"

    Differences:

  • Some schools move the right hand to the top when they turn up, in a rotating back-fist motion.

    Common mistakes:

  • Hands end up too close to the body
  • This motion also delineates the "safe" distance away from the body.
